A ritual where every step is a dance towards a place where anything is possible.

Yes!
Nuages (French for clouds) was inspired by the utopian-like qualities of a library, where people of all ages, cultures and walks of life come together to share resources, ideas and skills, and create the world they want to live in.
Conceived for the North Boulder Library in Colorado, it is a musical pathway integrated into the entrance of the new building signed by New York architecture firm WORKac. 44 interactive lines and 8 speaker units play warm synths, acoustic instruments, with just a touch of danceability.
Stepping on a line triggers a short note or phrase. Each line has a complementary sound which will layer into synced harmony and rhythm. The longer people move and play, more music layers are added. Melodies are created. With more players, more compositions grow.
Grouped in five sets, each with different spacings, Nuages’ musical lines invite visitors to change the way they move as they make their way to and from the library, stepping into different characters: the walker, the shuffler, the dancer, the jumper and the tip-toer. Visitors can try out each role, or they can simply walk right through and create their own soundtrack as well.
This project started before the pandemic! We were playing with a musical line prototype in our studios when all of a sudden, we were no longer allowed in our studios. And so we took our prototype to the street, and created a roving installation for extraordinary times, when struggling cities were looking for ways to inject some life and joy back into their public spaces. This installation became Walk Walk Dance.
